What's News???

8.4.24:  The 2024 Forest Lake Association Annual Meeting and picnic were a rousing success!   Many thanks to Barb and Jeff Ladd for opening up their lovely home, garage and yard and for all who came out to hear about what's been going on with the Board since we last met in 2023.  Thank you to Rhonda Sprague, ex-oficio President, for stepping up and being our official "MC" as both Larry Heindl and Linda Coyle were not able to attend.  And a huge thank you to the FLA Board who served as the picnic committee.  Everyone pitched in and helped do all the necessary stuff to make the meeting and picnic a success.  Thank you to our outgoing Board members:  Linda Coyle, Kristie Ohberg and Tom Ward and a big welcome and round of applause 👍 for the 3 new Board members:  Mike Barr,  Mark Dreyer and Tony Nicosia.

Mark your 2025 calendars for the 1st Saturday in August, the 2nd, for next year's annual meeting/picnic.  If you would like to volunteer to host the meeting on the lake, please contact anyone on the Board (see the Home page).  You can ask Jeff or Barb Ladd who had never hosted that it was not as scary as it may sound.  So, please, feel free to volunteer.

Mark Dreyer, author of the "Forever Chemical" articles found a company that tests for PFAS.   Tom Macak tried it and reports that his well water, on the southern shore, has NO detectable PFAS!!  What are PFA's you may ask.  Here is how the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency defines them:  PFAS are manufactured chemicals that have been used in industry and consumer products since the 1940s. Because of their widespread use and their persistence in the environment, many PFAS are found in the blood of people and animals all over the world. There are thousands of different PFAS, some of which have been more widely used and studied than others.

Below is the article found for us by Mark Dreyer:

WHAT WAS THAT STRANGE LIGHT THE OTHER NIGHT?

If you were at the lake the week of May 22nd,  you may have wondered why someone in a boat with a big spotlight was riding around, shining the light into the woods.  Well wonder no longer.  It was our own Larry "Bat Man" Heindl.  Larry and his wife, Bernie "Bat Woman", have volunteered to be bat monitors for the WI DNR in Vilas County.

They will be doing this work 4 more times this summer:  June 9-12, July 21-24, August 14 and September 1-5.  Stay tuned for more information on this important project.  And, thanks to Bat Man and Bat Woman!

While the summer and in-person classes are over, if you are still in need of your two-year retraining, it can be completed by going to the Vilas County Land & Water Conservation page with the link to the web-basesd retraining.

Just copy and paste this URL into your browser to get to the training:   https://www.vilascountywi.gov/departments/services/land_water_conservation/clean_boats,_clean_waters.php

LAKE CHAMPION AWARD

The annual Lake Champion Award was created and awarded in 2019. The premise behind the Forest Lake Champion Award is to recognize those individual homeowners who have worked selflessly for the preservation and stewardship over the years. The criteria is simple: it is individuals who have done some of the "dirty work" or as we commonly say, the "unsung heroes". They do this work through countless actions that preserve the lake and our lake community for future generations to enjoy. Those homeowners who founded the Forest Lake Association not only experienced the beauty of the lake and its environs but laid the groundwork for future generations to ensure that all of us continue to enjoy the beauty of Forest Lake today.
